Averages Over Five YearsAcres needed per buck harvested average out to be 388 acres per buck. Acres needed per doe harvested average out to be 119.25 acres per doe.
By taking the total acres (3,500) and dividing the total number of quality bucks over age 3.5 years that were harvested into it, this produces the total numbers of acres needed for that year to produce a quality buck. The average over a five year period comes to 1028 acres to produce a 3.5 year old buck. This comes to about 3 quality bucks a year for the entire property.

Data on bucks that did not meet harvest criteria. The data on the non-qualified (NQ) bucks is from the five year period and during this time the rules were pretty much the same as they are today. The buck must have a 14 inch inside spread and must at least have four points on one side. The four points on one side has been altered to read "and must at least be a seven point buck." There are 14 bucks that were aged at 2.5 years of age. Of these five met the qualifications. One in particular was a 16.25 inch inside spread 10 point. Pretty good for a 2.5 year old buck. Of the 9 remaining bucks 7 out of 9 were not 14 inches inside, 4 out of 9 were not 7 points or better, and 3 out of 9 missed both qualifications. Here's a better look: 13.25 inch 8 point =NQ 16.25 inch 10 point 13.5 inch 6 point = NQ 14 inch 4 point = NQ 12 inch 7 point = NQ 14.5 inch 8 point 13.5 inch 8 point = NQ 12 inch 6 point = NQ 14.25 inch 8 point 11.5 inch 9 point = NQ 14.5 inch 7 point 14.5 inch 9 point 14.25 inch 6 point = NQ 13 inch 8 point = NQ Okay on to the big boys. You'll like this. Based on 36 bucks at 3.5 years of age or older the average live weight is 178.5 pounds Based on 33 bucks at 3.5 years of age or older the average right main beam length is 18.45 inches Based on 33 bucks at 3.5 years of age or older the average right main beam circumference 1 inch above the bur is 3.98 inches. Of the 37 bucks over 3.5 years old we had one 4 point. This was an actual 2 X 2. 7 points = 2 8 points = 17 9 points = 8 10 points = 6 11 points = 2 13 points = 1 We do not have gross or net score data and at one time we were only collecting right main beam information with the exception of points. Now we are measuring both beam lengths and circumferences. Of the 6 bucks ages at 1.5 years of age none met the qualifications of the spread and only one met the point requirement. These bucks were small and were just mistakes by the hunters. Part of a learning curve I guess. Of the 36 bucks at or above 3.5 years of age we had 12 that did not meet the spread requirement and one that did not meet the point requirement. Of the 12 not meeting the spread requirement of 14 inches, 7 were at least 13 or more inches inside and the remaining 5 were in the 12 inch range. |
